Best Ways on How to Make Extra Money Fast

1. Sell your resources on Teachers pay Teachers

Teachers pay Teachers is an educational marketplace where teachers go to find time-saving resources to use in their classrooms. I stumbled on this website back in 2013. I had been a classroom teacher for over a decade and my paycheck had not changed much since I first started as a beginning teacher. Like you, I thought to myself, “There’s gotta be a way for a teacher to make more money.” So I went to Google and searched, “Teacher makes a million dollars.” And there it was. The answer to my prayers! I read an article about Deanna Jump and how she made a million dollars selling lesson plans online.

Wait! What? A million dollars!

Wow. I was hooked.

I knew absolutely nothing about this teachers pay teachers marketplace, but I knew that I had some amazing ideas that I could post and sell. There were projects, activities and resources that I had come up with in my years as a classroom teacher that I knew improved my students’ learning. I was super excited about the possibility of not only making extra income from just selling what I was already creating for my own students, but to think that kids around the US (and even possibly the world) could use these same resources to improve their learning was mind-blowing.

If you are a teacher looking for ways on how to make extra money from home, you HAVE GOT TO open up your own TpT store and start selling your products. I can’t even tell you how many of my own teacher friends I have told about TpT since I first started and out of all of them, only ONE opened up a store. And even she has not put the time or effort into creating resources to sell.

I will not lie to you. You will not become rich overnight. You WILL have long nights or times where you wake up much earlier to get working on your products, but it is fun! Chances are that you already have some resources or ideas that are original to you and all you have to do is learn how to package them in a way that other teachers can follow along and implement in their own classrooms. But you need to start today! Don’t delay putting in the work because before you know it, you’ll have multiple products in your store and will be well underway to making passive income.

On TpT, you have the choice to sell your products as a Basic Seller, which is completely FREE, but your payout is 55% on all sales. I highly recommend that you become a Premium Seller. It only costs $59.95 a year and you get to keep 80% of your earnings.

Becoming a teacher author will change your life. You’re immediately part of a community of teachers that are just like you, trying to get their side hustle on to make a little extra for themselves and their families. Many teachers are parents with small children and they simply can’t leave the home to go tutor (which we’ll discuss next) or get a part-time job somewhere. So becoming a teacherpreneur is by far the BEST way to make passive income.

What’s best is that once your product is up, there is NOTHING You have to do. Once a customer buys your product, they simply download it and use it as they wish. Occasionally you will have someone ask you a question on your resource or leave you feedback, so yes, you will have to have some upkeep in getting back to them (after all, providing good customer service is important in any business). But overall, if you are out on vacation, are sick, your kids are sick, or simply need a break, your store is still open for business and you’ll still get sales.

Since I opened up my store in 2013, my annual sales have fluctuated from $2991.21 my first year to $9098.99 in my highest earning year. This really isn’t nearly as much money as some other teachers who started when I did have made, but it’s still great passive income that I can count on year after year. My highest earning product is a Unit Circle Project that I used in my classroom and it was one of the first products that I posted when I first started. To this day it still generates me hundreds of dollars in sales.

2. Tutor

Tutoring is an obvious choice on how teachers can make extra money. There are plenty of tutoring places that are willing to hire teachers. One-on-one tutoring is often a better bet as you’ll get to keep the full amount that you charge. Once I tutored for a company and they were charging the customer $100 and yet I was only getting paid $60. Yes, the company was getting these clients for me, but still, I could’ve very well found my own clients and have made the full amount myself.

The best way to find students to tutor is from other teachers. You know there’s always those students that are failing or could use extra help. If you let your colleagues know that you are available to tutor, they’ll refer you to parents. Then you can coordinate a time and place where you can meet for the tutoring session and agree on a price.

Tutoring prices depend on where you live. If you live in South Carolina, for example, the tutoring rate might be $40 the hour, but if you live in Miami and tutor someone from Key Biscayne, those teachers get paid anywhere from $80 to $120 the hour.

The more experience you have, the more you can charge.

When I first started tutoring I was still in college and I would charge $20 the hour. That was pretty good money considering hourly part-time jobs were paying $8 tops. I remember spending my Sundays going from house to house tutoring students in math and I would easily make $200 to $300 a day. I would start early at 9 a.m. and be back home at 9 p.m. I hustled! But it was great income that I made in one day.

Once I became a teacher, I charged $40 the hour. And now after so many years in the classroom and with my expertise, I charge $80 the hour.

Don’t sell yourself short. Check to see what other teachers are charging. I charged $40 per hour for years and then found out that another math teacher at my school was charging $60. She and I had the same level of experience and years of teaching. I was hesitant to increase my prices, and so I kept my current clients at the same price but then increased the new clients and you know what, they were willing to pay the $60!

The best part of tutoring is that now we’ve all gotten practice with distance learning. So it’s easier than ever to open Zoom and help a student. This is so convenient for parents, teachers and the student. You don’t have worry about travel time to and from someone’s house, a common meeting point such as the library or a Starbucks.

 

3. Blogging

Just like I stumbled across Deanna Jump and her million dollar success story, I have stumbled upon Sophia from By Sophia Lee. I saw a YouTube post on how she made $9,000 a month on her blog. I was impressed! But wait! I then realized that was an older post. As I kept looking through her feed, I saw that she had posts on how she made $30,000 a month on her blog, and I thought, man, I need to start blogging.

Then I saw a YouTube video on how she makes over $75,000 a MONTH on her blog.

WHAT?!

So I looked up her latest post and I swear she must make a million dollars a year from blogging. And she’s been able to achieve this in just FOUR years. She started when she was a full-time college student and now she’s grown to having a team of employees.

So yes, this is now in fact my new obsession and I am determined to learn everything there is to know about blogging. I had already purchased my domain, Teaching from A-Z, because I have always heard from other TpT sellers that a blog is a great way to drive traffic to your store and improve your sales.

So I have a self-hosted wordpress site with Bluehost as my host (they have pretty good prices and when I started learning from Sophia she highly recommends Bluehost too).

I purchased a theme from 17th Avenue Designs (mine is Mia and I’m still learning how to make it look the way I want to). It cost me $69.

I purchased both courses By Sophia Lee on Perfecting Blogging and Perfecting Pinterest and let me tell you, it’s by far the best $249 I have EVER spent! She goes through so many details on exactly what she did to make over six figures a month on her blog and if I can even get to her $3000 a month, I will be the happiest person alive! You HAVE TO BUY both courses if you’re serious about making extra money fast. She’s huge on ROI (return on investment) and is strategic about everything she does to maximize how much money she earns from her blog in the shortest amount of time.

I am also using the free version of Canva to create my graphics and am buying my stock photos from depositphotos.com (I got a deal for 100 images for $100). And now I’m using Tailwind to increase blogger traffic. 

I love to write. I love to design. I have knowledge and experience. I love helping people. And I love shoes 😉 So I am going to love blogging!

This is my latest obsession and so far I have made ZERO dollars and have spent about $420, but I’m excited for the limitless possibilities that this money-making strategy will bring to me. And I am ready to do the work.
